Hydrogeology Program
This program addresses numerous projects and programs related to the science of hydrogeology in the Central, West Coast, and adjacent basins, including artificial recharge, saltwater intrusion, groundwater storage changes, basin management, water well pumping, computer modeling, and preparation of the annual Engineering Survey and Report. It includes evaluation of annual replenishment needs at the spreading grounds and the seawater barrier wells, and determines the overall health of the basins.
Some of the projects currently underway include groundwater tracer testing in the Montebello Forebay, conjunctive use analysis to identify basin storage opportunities, interpretation of new hydrogeologic information to improve our understanding of the complex underground aquifer network, well tests using spinner logging, computer modeling to predict future conditions, and the preparation of maps, reports, and technical bulletins. The program also provides support for most other District projects and programs where an analysis of the groundwater conditions underlying the Central and West Coast basins is needed. The program is performed by our in-house staff of hydrogeologists and technical support specialists, including four State Registered Geologists and Certified Hydrogeologists.
