Whittier Narrows Conservation Pool
The Whittier Narrows Dam provides flood control, recreation and water conservation for Los Angeles County. Construction of the dam was completed in March 1957 and since that time, the dam has provided a reliable means of capturing local stormwater flows that would otherwise be wasted to the ocean. These captured stormwater flows are later released and conserved in the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel River spreading grounds for groundwater replenishment purposes.

Increasing the amount of stormwater runoff that can be captured and held behind the Whittier Narrows Dam can increase the ability to conserve about 10,000 acre-feet of additional local water for recharge into the groundwater basin in the Los Angeles County area each year. The additional water captured from the Whittier Narrows Conservation Pool project is enough water for 40,000 people annually and will help reduce local reliance on expensive water imported into the area from the Sacramento and Colorado Rivers.
